Great shipmates = great duty ! Curtis Bay yard where the mount came off and oceano gear came on, the bent shaft in the Canal Zone, Eastropac 2&3 are some great memories. Fantastic to see so many names from the past but where are the three other double first initial ETs from Chief Smith's crew? I really wanted to finish my enlistment on board The Rock but LORAN duty in Udorn Thailand was in store. What a blast that was! A dozen Coasties among about a few thousand USAF officers and men. They couldn't figure us out and how we could get so much done with so few men and so little supplies. My health is starting to go but a hope that I can hang on for the next reunion (Wilmington, this October?) Hope to get some e-mails or calls from you guys.

SULLIVAN, John (EN-3, 1954 - 1958)
Las Vegas, Nevada

Updated Mar 30, 2010
I was assigned aboard the Rockaway right out of Boot Camp in September 1954. After my first patrol on Ocean Station Bravo I requested the engine room where I struck for enginman rating. In 1956 I made EN-3 and was transfered to the buoy tender Beach operating out of Staten Island. After a year on the Beach I finished my enlistment on the 83464 out of Cape May.
After my discharge I returned to Kansas City with my family. After a couple of years in KC, I was recruited and joined the Las Vegas, Nevada Police Department. I had a 34 year law enforcement career and retired from Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. The last twelve years of my career I held the rank of Deputy Chief, Chief of Detectives. After my retirement I obtained my private investigators license and formed Sullivan & Associates International. I specialize in litigation consulting and providing expert testimony in law enforcement and private security related criminal and civil litigations.
In looking over the Rockaway's Muster List I was surprised at some of the names I recall. Time aboard the Rock provided many of us that served some found memories. I had the opportunity to return to NY in the late 70's and I was sadden to see the old CG Base on Staten Island was no longer there and to see the uniform had been changed. No longer the tailored 18 inch bell bottoms, thirteen buttons, side blouse zipper and wings in our white hats. I recall several lively discussions were had when asked by another branch of the service what the little white shield was on our forearm. The standard response was, "Naval Intelligence."
I wish all my former shipmate the best.

Im lucky I lived through nights in NY with Bob Barnes.

TAYLOR, Sol ( SK3 54-55 ) CA USCGC Rockaway April 1954-October 1955. Engineering yeoman. Participated in the Wychwood rescue at sea during Hurricane Diane, August 1955. Escorted the USCGC Eagle to Europe in summer 1954--Spain, Holland and Denmark. Previously served at 3rd CG District on Ellis island during close down Jan-April 1954. I was the very last man to leave the island in 1954 and went directly to the Rockaway in dry dock in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. I took leave time in the fall of 1955 to resume my teaching career at my alma mater Tilden HS in Brooklyn and went to 3rd District HQ for my discharge in October 1955. I remained in the reserve until October 1970. I moved to California in 1960. I retired from education in 1982 and have been a full time Realtor since 1985.
I inquired to CG Hq in 2005 to ask if they would offer some recognition of the 50th anniversary of the Wychwood rescue at sea. They said "No", but "Job well done". I wonder if anyone else tried for some recognition of that event. I never saw it in any US newspaper. If more Roc vets asked for something formally to honor that event--we might get it.
Glad to see there is a site for old Roc vets to remember their time in service.
